Çukur Han

Based on information from Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname, Çukur Han was constructed in the second half of the 17th century. It was located in the area that was known at the time as the han district and now is divided by Fevzi Paşa Boulevard (Fevzi Paşa Bulvarı). For a little over a century after its construction, the inner harbor remained actively used, which allowed Çukur Han, like other hans in the region, to serve caravans extensively. However, as the inner harbor silted up and railways were introduced in the second half of the 19th century, Çukur Han, similar to Büyük Vezir Hanı and Küçük Vezir Hanı, began to be primarily used as an office space, undergoing a transition from a traditional han to an early modern business center.

The han was built with a T-shaped courtyard that aligned with the characteristics of its parcel. One of its facades facing the courtyard was two stories high, while the other facade and the rear section were three stories tall. According to historical records, the han survived the Great Fire of İzmir without damage. However, it is stated that it was demolished during the construction of Fevzi Paşa Boulevard, which extends from Basmane Station toward the sea.

Nonetheless, today, there is another structure named Çukur Han, with one facade opening onto Fevzi Paşa Boulevard and another onto Mimar Kemalettin Street (Mimar Kemalettin Caddesi). Recently restored and currently serving as the headquarters of IZDOGA Co. Inc., a subsidiary of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, this building resembles to the Çukur Han described in historical sources. These sources also emphasize the han’s grandeur. However, a portion of the structure was demolished during the construction of Fevzi Paşa Boulevard. The remaining part was restored and is still in use today. Thus, it can be assumed that the surviving section has retained its original form.
