Built in the 18th century by Piyalezade Hacı Mehmet Ağa, Piyaleoğlu Hanı is located in the same district as Abacıoğlu Hanı. It is one of the rare hans in İzmir constructed without vaults. Piyaleoğlu Hanı originally contained 23 rooms. Its courtyard, with a depth of 80 meters, follows parcel’s shape, gradually forming a V-shape as it extends towards the back.
From the early 18th century, when it was constructed, to the present day, Piyaleoğlu Hanı has followed a similar trajectory to its neighbor, Abacıoğlu Hanı. Initially serving caravans, it gradually lost this function and was later repurposed as a storage facility. It also served as a transportation hub for buses and trucks arriving from surrounding districts for a while. During this time, it was also used as accommodation for those who had to stay overnight in İzmir.
As one of the few historical hans in Kemeraltı that has survived to the present day, Piyaleoğlu Hanı now houses a tea garden and various shops. Like its neighbor, Abacıoğlu Hanı, it awaits restoration and the day it will regain greater visibility.
