Traian’s Fountain

The Trajan Fountain, built in the 2nd century AD, is a two-story structure. The inscription on the fountain indicates that it was built for Roman Emperor Trajan between the years AD 102-114. The term “Neokoros” precedes the name of Ephesus on the inscription, which is a title granted by Rome signifying the permission to erect a temple in the emperor’s honor.

The Trajan Fountain is composed of two-story columns arranged in a “U” shape. There are two pools in front of the fountain. The water of the fountain flows from a channel where the statue of Trajan is located on the upper floor, leading into the pools in front. In the central niches of the fountain, there are statues of Emperor Trajan and his family, satyrs, Dionysus, and Aphrodite. (Anonymous)
