Terrace House 4

he Terrace Houses located in the ancient city of Ephesus are among the significant and striking structures from the Roman period. These houses stand out with their wealth and splendid architectures. Their walls are decorated with frescoes, while their interiors are enriched with marble flooring and ornate mosaics. Some houses also contain private baths and water systems, indicating the advanced level of living comfort of that era.

These houses were built on terraced slopes to utilize the city’s steep terrain. The structures within include affluent residences, shops, and workshops, reflecting the vibrancy of trade and craft activities in Ephesus at that time.

The Terrace Houses are generally two or three stories high and are situated between narrow streets. Surrounded by high walls, these houses typically feature a courtyard or an inner garden, with rooms arranged around a central courtyard. This courtyard served as the center of family life.

People living in these houses usually resided on the upper floors, as these were designed as more private and comfortable living spaces. The lower floors were often used for commercial purposes, housing shops or workshops on the ground levels. This arrangement not only provided the homeowners with a comfortable living but also facilitated their commercial activities.

The Terrace Houses in the ancient city of Ephesus are important examples of architectural and social life from the Roman period. With their magnificent structure, rich interiors, and functional arrangement, these houses hold great historical and cultural value. (Anonymous)
